Who was Rachel Apa?

Rachel Apa was a 24 year old runner who originally came from Lewisberry, York County, Pennsylvania. She had recently moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where she had begun pursuing a new chapter in her career and education.

Apa graduated from Bucknell University in 2024 with a degree in markets, innovation and design. During her four years at the university, she played Division I field hockey and scored 17 goals.

Following graduation, she began working as a product manager at TE Connectivity. She had also recently started an MBA programme at Charleston Southern University.

Her father, Steve Apa, and grandfather had both worked for the same company.

Why was she running the New York City Marathon?

The November 1 race was Apa's first marathon. She was running to raise money for the Parkinson’s Foundation in honour of her paternal grandfather, who died from Parkinson’s disease in 2022.

She had described her grandfather as a role model and wanted to use the marathon to support the cause.

Apa initially set a fundraising target of $4,000. Following her death, donations continued to come in, and her fundraising page reportedly surpassed $22,000.

According to her father, she had completed an 18 mile training run before the event and was prepared for the marathon.

What happened during the 2026 New York City Marathon?

The 2026 New York City Marathon took place on Sunday, November 1. Apa's parents were following her progress during the race, with her father tracking her location through a marathon app from Lewisberry, Pennsylvania.

Her mother, Michelle, was watching along the course. She reportedly saw her daughter smiling and high-fiving spectators around mile 14 in Long Island City, Queens.

During the second half of the race, Apa began telling her father that she was experiencing pain. He encouraged her to take it easy, reminding her that finishing the marathon mattered more than her speed.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., her father noticed that her location on the tracking app had stopped moving.

Apa had collapsed near mile 24, around 85th Street in Central Park, approximately two miles before the finish line.

How did spectators and medical teams respond?

After Apa collapsed, bystanders began attempting to help her.

Michaela Nicholas, a spectator who worked as a hospital social worker, was among those who stopped to assist. She reportedly checked Apa and found no pulse.

Two people who identified themselves as physicians also helped perform CPR before race medical personnel took over.

Medical staff used a defibrillator as emergency responders worked to stabilise her. She was subsequently transported by ambulance to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Her mother, who had been waiting near mile 25, noticed that her daughter's location had stopped moving and went towards mile 24. An emergency medical services worker informed her that the ambulance had already left and drove her to the hospital.

Doctors continued trying to save Apa for more than six hours. She was declared dead at approximately 9:40 p.m. on November 1.

What was the reported cause of Rachel Apa's death?

Apa's father, Steve, said doctors had told the family that she died from rhabdomyolysis, a potentially life-threatening condition involving the rapid breakdown of muscle tissue.

The condition can cause muscle contents to enter the bloodstream and potentially damage vital organs, including the kidneys. It can occur following intense physical exertion, among other causes.

Steve described the reported diagnosis as extremely rare and said his daughter had no known prior health issues.

However, the New York City medical examiner had not officially determined the cause of death and was still investigating. New York Road Runners, the organisation responsible for the marathon, had also not confirmed an official cause.

Tributes following her death

Following the news of Apa's death, tributes came from organisations and communities connected to her life.

Bucknell University and its athletics department remembered her as a former student-athlete. USA Field Hockey and her employer, TE Connectivity, also expressed condolences.

New York Road Runners issued a statement expressing sadness over her death.

Her passing also drew attention to the risks associated with endurance events and the medical emergencies that can occur during long-distance races.

The 2026 New York City Marathon covered the traditional 26.2-mile course, with Apa collapsing just short of its final stretch.

The investigation into her cause of death remains ongoing.
